COP28 – TGE’s stance on fossil fuel attendees

The ongoing UN climate talks, COP28, have unveiled a surge in the number of delegates linked to fossil fuel industries. Campaigners report that this figure has quadrupled since the previous year, raising questions about the effectiveness of such conferences in addressing the global climate crisis. True Green Energy (TGE), however, maintains a pragmatic stance on energy transition, emphasising the need for inclusive discussions involving all stakeholders, including those from the fossil fuel sector.

This year’s COP28 in Dubai is the largest climate conference to date, with approximately 97,000 participants, including politicians, diplomats, journalists, and activists. However, a critical analysis reveals that 2,456 representatives from coal, oil, and gas industries and related organisations are present—four times the number seen at COP26 in Glasgow, where 500 delegates had ties to fossil fuel backgrounds.

True Green Energy recognises that a pragmatic approach is essential when addressing the complex challenges of climate change. Instead of sidelining industries connected to fossil fuels, we argue for their active participation in climate summits. According to us, these industries must be part of the conversation to acknowledge the reality of the problem and collaborate on finding sustainable solutions.

We emphasise that everything humans utilise—whether mined resources or agricultural products—ultimately impacts the environment. We contend that excluding fossil fuel industries from discussions on reducing carbon emissions is counterproductive. To achieve meaningful progress, it is imperative to involve key players from these sectors in climate summits.

While striving for a world less dependent on fossil fuels, we understand the current limitations of technology and capacity to entirely transition to renewables. We advocate for a dual strategy: minimising carbon emissions from within these key industries and simultaneously encouraging them to contribute to research and development of alternative energy solutions.

We believe that a collaborative approach is the key to success in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Instead of isolating fossil fuel industries, we urge a collective effort that involves governments, industries, and environmental advocates. By fostering an environment of cooperation, there is a greater likelihood of finding innovative solutions that pave the way for a sustainable future.

As the world grapples with the urgent need to address climate change, True Green Energy stands firm in its belief that a pragmatic and inclusive approach is the way forward. COP28 may have revealed an increase in the number of delegates tied to fossil fuel industries, but we see this as an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration. By recognising the reality of our dependence on fossil fuels and actively involving these industries in climate discussions, we aim to contribute to a more comprehensive and effective strategy for a greener and more sustainable future.
